Gerard Jean-Juste, a human rights activist and priest from Haiti, helped refugees fleeing persecution under the Duvalier regime in Miami in the '70s, then returned to Haiti in 1990 to become pastor in Tiplas Kazo.
As a result of his activism, he has been imprisoned for months at a time without access to due process of the law.

An attorney for the Rev. Gerard Jean-Juste says the beloved and influential Haitian priest, who fought for immigrant rights in the U.S., has died.
Immigration attorney Ira Kurzban said the 62-year-old Jean-Juste died Wednesday afternoon in a Miami area hospital.
The Catholic priest suffered from leukemia but the cause of death was not immediately clear.
Jean-Juste founded the Haitian Refugee Center in Miami in the late 1970s.
He later returned to Haiti and spoke out against a coup that forced then president Jean-Bertrand Aristide from office.
He was arrested in 2005 on what international human rights groups called politically motivated charges, before eventually being released for medical treatment in the U.S. All charges against him were later dropped.
When I came here twenty-four years ago, my step mother threw me out of my father's house.
I had consulted Pere Gerard Jean-Juste to talk to my step mother and he did. He gave me great advice and I moved on. Since then I considered this man as my father.
It is sad today to hear the passing of Mr. Jean-Juste.
He was a great man, mentor and a father figure for me. Unfortunately I will not see him again to let him know how much I admire him. Today I am doing very well and become a very good citizen.
We will miss Mr. Jean-Juste dearly.
My sincere condolence to those who works close to him and his family.
