In the objective to help Haiti, an advance element of the Canadian Armed Forces Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) arrived in Haiti late Tuesday to consider whether to recommend to Ottawa that it should provide emergency assistance for some of the estimated one million Haitians left homeless by Hurricane Ike, Hurricane Gustav and tropical storm Hanna.
The decision to send the DART advance team was confirmed Wednesday by a senior military source.
The reconnaissance trip to Haiti includes a senior DART officer, military engineers and medical personnel as well as representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
