Nine Americans died from other than natural causes in Haiti in 2008. Poverty often leads to violent acts, such as kidnapping.
Last year, 25 Americans were abducted in Haiti.
The police force is ineffective in many areas.
Haiti also seems to be a magnet for devastating tropical storms and hurricanes.
1. Iraq was ranked number two most violent country.
Although there have been improvements in the security situation in the country, it remains a volatile place.
2. Afghanistan was number three in most violent country.
American-led coalition forces recently began an offensive against the resurgent Taliban in the country
3. Somalia.
This is a country that effectively has been without a functioning government for nearly 20 years.
4. North Korea.
Run by a dictator with megalomaniacal tendencies who may be dying from cancer, it’s really a bad idea for any American to contemplate traveling to North Korea for any reason
5. Iran. This is another nation with a government that has shown a willingness to incarcerate whatever Westerners it can find for political reasons.
6. Honduras was ranked just befor Haiti as one mof the most violent countries.
This was a dangerous place for Americans to visit even before the recent upheaval caused by a military coup.
