Jean-Baptiste Riche, Haitian President

Jean-Baptise Riché (b. Grande-Rivière du Nord, 1777 – d. Port-au-Prince, February 27,1847)

President for life : March 1, 1846-February 27, 1847.

General Jean-Baptise Riché, though illiterate and old, had the common sense to end the dictatorship of his predecessors and surround himself with capable officials who rendered his administration profitable for the country. They revived the 1816 Constitution with minor revisions.

His short tenure did not allow him time to accomplish much. He is credited with the creation of the Maison Centrale, a boarding school for homeless boys.

General Acaau, leader of the Piquets was an enemy of President Riché. He refused to recognize him as Chief of State. Having called his former soldiers to arms, Acaau rebelled against the government. Defeated he committed suicide on March 12, 1846. A series of encounters between his Armée Souffrante and the government army from March to June 1846 resulted in the complete annihilation of Acaau’s movement.
President Riché died on February 27, 1847.
