Wilson Bigaud was born in Port au Prince in 1931.
His Father was a farmer. When still a young boy at school, he showed a great talent for drawing. Hector Hyppolyte discovered him in 1946 and took him to the Art Center. He painted and sold many pictures.
In 1950 he was chosen to paint a mural in the Cathedrale Sainte Trinite. "The Wedding at Cana" remains his master peice. In 1958 the Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased his "Earthly Paradise". He became world known. However in 1955 he suffered a mental breakdown and ceased to paint for eight years.
When he started again, he produced country scenes, somewhat repetitive yet retaining a certain Haitian charm and flavor. A devout adept of Voodoo, he is said to have concluded a pact with a "bocor" in order to be able to continue painting. His strong willed spouse manage his life and career.
