Provisional President: May 25, 1957 – June 14, 1957
The leader of the popular Mouvement d’Organisation du Pays (M.O.P), Daniel Fignolé, was a gifted orator, former minister of Education and a deputy. Fignolé never realized that the provisional president he accepted was merely a temporary plot to pacify the Port-au-Prince masses. Nineteen days after being sworn in, he was overthrown by the arm, and many of his followers who dared protest were mercilessly massacred by the armed forces.
Military Council of Government: June 14, 1957 – October 22, 1957 Provisional President: Colonel Antonio Th. Kébreau Members: Colonels Emile Zamor and Adrien Valville
With Daniel Fignolé, a powerful contender for the presidency out of the way, the military was free to rig the next elections in favor of their candidate. During this period, women were granted the right to vote. On September 22, 1957, Dr. François Duvalier was elected for a six-year term. Protests by other candidates were severely repressed, and strikes were declared illegal.
