Michel Oreste (b. Jacmel, April 8, 1859 – d. New York, October, 28, 1918) President: May 4, 1913 – January 27, 1914
Michel Oreste, an eminent lawyer and senator of the Republic, was named president on May 4, 1913 in relacemnet of President Tancrède Auguste, the first civilian to become president of Haiti since independence, his short administration was weakened by the resistance of the army to civilian rule, a resurgence of Caco insurgency and corruption.
A stadium named after President Leconte was erected in the capital during his tenure. Money to rebuilt the national palace destroyed by the explosion of August 1912, was appropriated by the legislature. Work began in May 1914.
Constantly fighting the Cacos, president Michel Oreste was forced to resign and fled the country. He went into exile on January 27, 1914.
