The same day of the catastrophe that took the life of President Leconte, general Tancrède Auguste was elected president by the National Assembly. All he had to do was follow in the footsteps of his predecessor who left him a well organized administration. He maintained the main cabinet ministers of the previous administration at their posts, including Education minister Tertulien Guilbaud who started the parish schools with the help of the Roman Catholic clergy.
Soon, the efforts of the new president were halted when the Cacos once more reappeared. During a trip to the North Department in order to calm down the agitation, he fell ill. He died, on May 2, 1913.
