Shortage Of Clean Drinking Water In Haiti

Shortage Of Clean Drinking Water In Haiti
Monday April 05, 2010 07:02 AM ET

In the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake one of the biggest problems was a shortage of clean, drinkable water.

The world has been sending drinking water to Haiti and via plastic containers in large proportion.

Do we really need drinking water in Haiti to be shipped in plastic cans, causing more problem with trash and others.

Haiti needs better drinking water; however it should not be short term. There are several ways we can improve the distributions of drinking water in Haiti, and one of the goals of Haiti reconstruction needs to be focused on clean, drinking water for all Haitians

An American company, WorldWater & Solar Technologies, was on hand with a number of solar-powered water pumps and purifiers after the Haiti earthquake to provide drinking water to the Haitian population.

The pumps, unlike the bottled water provided by the big aid operations, they do not generate any trash.

Re: Shortage Of Clean Drinking Water In Haiti

Haiti is one of the many struggling countries where fresh water is inadequately available due to infrastructure problems This has proven deadly in the wake of the recent devastation from the January 20010 earthquake.

If the water supply in Haiti was adequate for total functionality for the Haitians; drinking, cooking, cleaning and sanitation, a great deal would be gained.

There would be less disease, better living conditions, stronger economic stability; through innovation, manufacturing, and agricultural production.

The earthquake had a devastating impact on Haiti's health infrastructure.

Thus, conditions will only worsen for the 250, 000 left without shelter unless a public health system is developed.

Sanitation is not the only concern for Haitians now residing in tent cities with limited resources.

Once nightfall arrives, women face the constant fear of rape and attack.

To make things worse, the earthquake destroyed many of the rape counseling centers including Haiti's Ministry for Women's Affairs, which was in the midst of implementing its five-year plan to reduce violence against women.

Currently steps such as the distribution of solar flashlights and rape kits, along with providing better lighting and security patrols have been implemented to protect women in the camps.
