Over 200, 000 Lives Could Have Been Saved In Haiti

The magnitude-7 earthquake in Haiti did not kill, but our buildings did. A five-person U.S. team evaluating the magnitude-7 earthquake that struck Haiti Jan. 12 says much of the massive loss of life might have been prevented. The team, led by University of Washington structural engineering Professor Marc Eberhard, said its main conclusion was that much of the loss of life could have been prevented by using earthquake-resistant designs and construction, as well as improved quality control in concrete and masonry work.
The researchers recommended simple and cost-effective earthquake engineering be emphasized in Haiti's rebuilding effort. See more pictures of earthquake resistant buildings: http://www.haitianphotoalbum.com/pictures-7
Eberhard said "A lot of the damaged structures will have to be destroyed. It's not just 100 buildings or 1,000 buildings. It's a huge number of buildings, which I can't even estimate."
Your opinion counts.
Do you think that we should move the Haitian capital to another location?
Should we destroy all standing buildings in Port-au-Prince and then start from scratch?
Should the Haitian Government establish (new) building codes for construction?

1. NO!!!! The Capital should not be moved to another location. 2. YES!!!! Destroy all and start from scratch. 3. YES!!!! New Building codes for everyone. There should be NO exception. Let's see what we can accomplish.....

Morning, Keep up the good work on keeping everyone you can reach with what's going on with our mother land.
I thimk the government should start from scratch, because if they had code rettrictions on how to build and instructions that if it doesn't meet code standard that they would not aprove any further construction till it's done properly. We would not have found ourselves in this sad catastrophe that happen last month. They need to pay more attention to our country and the way things are been done, only then such horror like January 12th won't happen again. Even if we had another earth quake their would be less lives loss and most of all, we could have a better handle on providing help for ourselves.

Hi Roland! You know! That thought ran through my mind! What with the delicate situation in the area, (earthquakes, tidal waves, monsoons, etc), that stronger reenforcements of building structures, reefs, and other disaster-preventative measures should, and would help prevent the overwhelming disasters that have become so repetitive in the region. I fully support your ideas in the change in improving the safety-measures prior to construction of all building-facets! Thanks for sending me your ideas. Good Luck my friend, and God's Speed to your people! EdnKing (Panama).
